RSI and MACD on Indian indices

RSI and MACD are the two oscillator panes most Indian desks keep under NIFTY or a liquid stock. They do not predict. They compress momentum so you can see stretch and stall against the session. Used against 9:15–15:30 candles, they are useful. Used as “RSI 70 = sell,” they are a tax.

RSI 14 on indices

Wilder’s RSI 14 on NIFTY 15m will spend entire trend days above 60. That is trend, not a short. Overbought on an index in a budget week can stay overbought until the close. The useful reads are:

• RSI holding a rising 40–50 band while price holds VWAP — dip-buy context, not a signal by itself.
• RSI failing 50 after a morning spike — momentum handed back, look at the candle close.
• Divergence only after a swing high that also fails previous day high or a round strike.

On BANKNIFTY 5m, RSI is noisier. Widen your idea of “stretch” or step up a timeframe. A two-pane desk (15m RSI on NIFTY, 5m price on BANKNIFTY) beats one frantic oscillator.

MACD histogram, not the legend

MACD (12, 26, 9) on Indian indices is a lagging agreement tool. The histogram turning through zero after a Supertrend flip is confirmation, not the first reason to click. A MACD cross in the middle of lunch on a sideways NIFTY is how you donate brokerage. Prefer histogram contraction into a level you already marked — previous day high, opening range, VWAP.

Session context first

Oscillators ignore the auction. A 15:20 RSI 75 on expiry is square-up. A 9:25 RSI 75 after a gap through previous day high is initiation. Read the candle and the clock, then glance at the pane. Pair with Supertrend and VWAP if you need a regime line on the price chart itself.
