MACD explained: reading trend momentum on Indian charts

Learn what the MACD line, signal line and histogram show, and how to use MACD with price structure on NIFTY and liquid stocks.

What MACD measures

MACD compares two exponential moving averages and then smooths their difference with a signal line. The histogram shows the distance between those two lines, which helps describe changes in momentum.

A crossover is not a guaranteed entry signal. It becomes more useful when it agrees with price structure, timeframe context and a clearly defined risk plan.

Use MACD without losing the price chart

Start with the NIFTY, BANKNIFTY or stock chart and identify the trend, key levels and session context. Then use MACD to ask whether momentum confirms the move or is fading beneath the surface.

Keep the settings consistent while comparing instruments. Changing parameters until one historical section looks ideal can create a strategy that does not generalize.
