MCX commodity charts for gold and crude

MCX hours, rupee-denominated gold and crude, and why commodity charts need their own session, not an NSE copy-paste.
MCX gold, silver and crude are rupee contracts with their own clock. Copying an NSE 9:15–15:30 layout onto GOLD or CRUDEOIL is how you misread the first two hours and the last two. Commodity charts need the MCX session, Indian lot specs, and a respect for overnight cues from COMEX and WTI without pretending those prints are your fill.
Hours that are not the cash market
MCX runs morning into late evening (check the exchange calendar for the contract you trade — holidays and muhurat sessions move). Gold often does its real work after NSE cash has closed, when USDINR and overseas gold start to matter more than NIFTY. Crude can gap on an EIA print that lands well after Indian equities are done. Your chart timezone should be Asia/Kolkata; your session filter should be the commodity’s, not 9:15–15:30 by habit.
Read rupee candles, not dollar headlines
The candle on GOLD is an INR price. A strong COMEX night can still print a quiet MCX morning if the rupee moved the other way. Trade the MCX OHLC — body and wicks still apply — and treat overseas futures as context, not as a second chart you execute on.
- GOLD / GOLDM: watch USDINR and the previous MCX session high/low before the day session.
- CRUDEOIL / CRUDEOILM: inventory and geopolitics gap; size for the range, not for NIFTY-like stops.
- SILVER: wider relative range than gold; the same Supertrend factor will feel tighter.
Indicators that survive commodities
VWAP still describes the MCX session mean if you reset it on that product’s open. Supertrend still describes the swing. The same pairing as F&O works if you accept that ATR on crude is a different animal from ATR on NIFTY. RSI on a 1h gold chart is calmer than RSI on 5m CRUDEOIL — match the pane to the holding period.
Layout for a commodity desk
Keep GOLD 15m, CRUDEOIL 15m, and a USDINR or NIFTY pane if you hedge risk-on days. A multi-chart workspace is the same product feature — different symbols, different session, same engine.
Gold, crude and the rest of the MCX board on the same terminal as NSE — own candles, not a widget.
